It's Hard Being A Woman

February 18, 2018

It's hard being a woman. We carry the weight of the world on our shoulders; from managing work and school, to taking care of our homes, children, husbands, and ailing family members, the hats we wear are many, the skills we've mastered are few. We rise early and retreat late, all in an effort to make sure everything gets done...and then there's us; often neglected and left feeling rejected because we don't allot time to honor ourselves. We strive for perfection. We strive to be the woman of Proverbs 31. Who is she? In part, "...she brings him good, no harm...she gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family...she sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks..." Mighty woman is she, but before we can become her, we have to understand who we are. Perhaps Gods' intention wasn't for every woman to become her. Honestly speaking, I'd love to become her, yet I’m nowhere near close, and that's ok. I believe God wants us to be uniquely who He created us to be; a special version of the amazing Proverbs 31 woman. The original woman of Proverbs is a mentor of sorts, guiding me in areas of my life that are somewhat weak while reminding me of my own greatness. How she handled life was extraordinary. That's something I strive for.

Gaining an understanding of how God sees us and accepting that truth with our hearts and minds will help us see that the woman God intended us to be and the woman we want to be are one in the same. "We are fearfully and wonderfully made by God." Prior to understanding this, I allowed the world to form its image of me instead of following the image set for me by my maker. Psalms 139: 13-16 says, " ...for you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth". We are by no means a mistake, our Godly mold divinely made just for us. In Genesis 2 God realized Adam needed a helpmate. God saw Adam's need for an equal partner and because of that, woman was created. Carefully crafted from the rib of Adam woman was made to be his equal and Adam was pleased.

What does it mean to be made in the image and likeness of God? In an effort to understand this more, I looked up the meaning of the Hebrew word for image, "tselem". It means shape and resemblance. The Hebrew word for likeness, "demuth" means pattern or form. This fascinates me. I am in awe and honored that God loves us so much that He made us just like Him.

There will be times where people question your character and the way you live your life; this has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their desire to have governance of your domain. They want you to please them instead of them working on pleasing themselves. Don't attempt to please others because within your efforts, you loose sight of yourself and become unhappy. I did this for many years, but no longer.  Remember to love yourself. When you do, you will not allow others to change you. God said in Song of Solomon 4:7, "You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you". No matter how the tasks of home, school or work make you feel, you are divinely perfect. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
